Ingredients

all-purpose flour

beef chuck
cut in 1-inch cubes

shortening

condensed tomato soup
10 1/2 oz each

onion
chopped
1/2
tsp
dried basil
crushed

medium
potatoes
pared and cubed

medium
carrots
cut in 1-inch pieces
1/2
cup
dry red wine or water
Instructions
Combine flour, salt, and dash pepper.
Coat meat cubes in seasoned flour.
Add soup, 2 1/2 cups water, onion, and basil.
Cover and bake in 375
o
oven about 1 hour.
Add potatoes, carrots, and wine.
If the gravy needs thickening, combine 1 to 2 tbs. flour with water to form a thick paste and add to stew.
Cover and bake 1 hour longer or until tender.
Makes 4 to 6 servings.
